Yesterday, my husband and I were driving home from the supermarket in his Mini Cooper convertible. We had the top down, the sun was shining and the wind was blowing through our hair.
Sounds idyllic, doesn’t it?
Not if you’re not the one doing the driving. Hi, my name is Kat, and I’m a backseat (or passenger seat) driver.
As we cruised down the highway, I felt myself starting to tighten up. The tension in my neck, shoulders, back and legs increased with each passing mile as my husband zigged and zagged in and around the other cars on the road.
Before we get to my “aha” moment, let me first say my husband is an excellent driver. I often tell?him I think he may have raced cars in a former life. When he’s behind the wheel, he’s laser focused. And to tell the truth, his car just begs to go fast. I know because I’ve driven it myself many times.
So there we were racing down the highway. My stress level on the rise with each passing mile. And?then something amazing happened. I made a decision right then and there to stop trying to control the situation. I asked myself, “what would happen if I just decided to let go – to let him drive the car, and I’ll just be the passenger?”
I breathed in deeply, closed my eyes, sat back … and enjoyed the ride. In this moment of surrender, I realized how often I try to control things that aren’t in my control.
It takes so much energy to be?a control freak. Deep down I know that.
It’s why I try so hard to tune in when I get little nudges like I did on that car ride home. Listening to that?inner voice which is more of?a whisper than a roar can get us that much closer to a state of balance. Which is exactly where I want to be.
Do you feel the need to control?every little thing in your life? I’d love to hear how you get back on track. Let’s keep the conversation going. Please share your comments below. And if you need help trying to balance the busyness in your life, check out how I can help.
