When I first heard of SunWarrior protein shakes, I was a bit skeptical. I’ve tried many healthy protein shakes and up until SunWarrior had only liked one other. Most of the vegan shakes I’ve tried have a great nutrient profile, but they don’t taste very good. They can be gritty and to be honest, downright disappointing. Lackluster even.
It’s great to eat healthy, but it’s been my experience that if it doesn’t taste good, I probably won’t stick with it for very long. In fact, I’ve noticed I have a habit of keeping abandoned protein powders in?the cabinet (I can’t stand to waste) in the hopes that there will come a day that I need something quick and will blend it up. What actually happens is I eventually check the date and see that it’s expired which is like a get out of jail free card?I can finally throw it away without feeling guilty.
But?back to SunWarrior. I tried their Mocha protein shake and was surprised by how tasty it is! There’s no gritty aftertaste and it has a ton of healthy properties: It’s vegan, gluten free, soy free, dairy free, plant based, organic, non-GMO and there’s no sugar added. Plus it has 17 grams of protein and a robust amino acid profile (the fundamental building blocks of our tissues). So much to love!
I’m a big fan of coffee flavored anything but can’t take the caffeine. No matter how hard I try, it eventually causes adrenal fatigue if I have it for too long. There’s no caffeine jolt from SunWarrior’s mocha shake. I felt energized but not in the frenzied way caffeine make you feel. A huge bonus for me because I can drink it whenever I want without worrying about the eventual system meltdown that the effects of caffeinated beverages or food have on?me.
I’m sure you can mix it in a shaker cup, but I blended mine with almond or flax milk, water and three ice cubes. If you’re expecting a thick shake, this isn’t it. It might be if you add fruit, but I like to keep it simple so I didn’t. It tastes like mocha milk with the consistency of regular chocolate milk. I don’t mind that. It’s light and refreshing. A great add on to breakfast or to have for breakfast if you’re on the go and typically skip meals.
One other thing I thought I’d mention is I see a lot of women in my practice who don’t get enough protein in their diets. They tend to carb load or eat less protein than what’s required. The problem with this, besides weight gain, is you burn those calories way too fast and then your body wants more food to keep the engine running. Adding in a protein shake like SunWarrior can help boost up the daily required protein intake pretty easily.
I’d love to know if you’ve tried this shake and what you think about it. Feel free to leave comments below. I’d be happy to food chat with you!
