September is the New January

When I first heard the phrase, “September is the new January,” it really resonated with me because I still have that back-to-school mentality once September rolls around.?

I may not be heading to the classroom, but once Labor Day is over, I do want to have more structure around my diet, workouts,?self-care, and spending quality time with my family.

And even though my back-to-school days are long over, I still feel the urge to start something new in the Fall. Cleaning, organizing, and cooking are much more structured than my loosey-goosey summer schedule.

This past weekend I found myself cleaning out clutter from a few rooms that had become dumping grounds over the Summer. It felt good to clear some space and neaten up a little. And so the transition begins …

Here’s my back to school top tips for grown-ups in case you feel the urge to start something new:

  • Pick Up One Thing. Let’s face it, we’re all busy women. If you want to neaten up and don’t have a lot of time to clear a room, commit to picking up one thing every time you go into it, and put it away. I’ve been doing this with my cellar. When I go down there, I make sure I bring something back up with me. And then I either recycle it or throw it out. I can finally walk from one end to the other without tripping over something!

  • ?Monday? Is Start Over Day.?Every?Monday I start fresh. I plan meals for the week, eat better, restart my fitness program if I’ve fallen off, and set some goals for myself like journaling, calling a friend, or cleaning out my emails. I don’t sweat what I didn’t get done the week before. Having a fresh start is one of the things I like best about Mondays.

  • Eat That Frog.?Most days we have things to do that we’d all rather avoid. I know I do. Like balancing the budget, or having a difficult conversation. The longer we put it off, the harder it gets. The book, Eat That Frog, by Brian Tracy, suggests doing the difficult things first and everything else will seem much easier. So I put the most difficult tasks at the top of the list and make sure I check them off first.
For me, once school starts, summer is officially over. It’s time to move on to something new. Need ideas? Check out my new program that starts this Fall. It’s all about you, and you’re going to love it!
