I was visiting with a friend recently and we started talking about health. She was picking my brain to see if I had any insights about why she couldn’t lose weight. She eats healthy most of the time and cooks her own food. She told me she even tried walking every day for three months and didn’t lose so much as a pound.

After listening to her story, I said something that got her attention. It didn’t seem like anything special to me, but I could tell it was important to her. I said, “When it comes to losing weight, it’s hardly ever about the food.”

“Yes!” she said excitedly. “I knew it!”

It was like a lightbulb went off. Everything she knew about her efforts to lose weight was confirmed. It wasn’t just about the food.

I share this story because I know she’s not the only one struggling to figure it out. To me, it was an offhanded comment. To her, it was a lifeline.
